1. Can I get HyperChem for the Macintosh?

We do not currently have a Macintosh version of HyperChem.

There are two critical issues with respect to running HyperChem under Windows (or Windows emulators) on a non-PC. The first is proper Windows emulation; the second is the hardware lock.

The new version of SoftWindows, Version 2.0, provides the 386 Enhanced mode that is required for running HyperChem. (Earlier versions of SoftWindows did not.) 486 boards are available that can be installed in a PowerMac, which would allow one to run regular Windows. Either of these should solve the operating-system issue.

The hardware lock must be installed on a bidirectional parallel port, which most Macs and 486 boards do not have. The 200-series Orange Micro cards for NuBus include such a port, and Orange Micro reports that HyperChem runs properly using these boards. They expect that the 400-series boards (PCI card), which are still under development, will also let HyperChem run properly. Orange Micro can be reached at (714) 779-2772, or at 1400 N Lakeview Dr., Anaheim CA 92807. (This does not constitute an official endorsement of their products...)

Another possible work-around would be to use the network version of HyperChem, and install the lock and its driver on a PC elsewhere on a network. HyperChem, running on the Mac under some kind of Windows, would then access the hardware lock remotely. It sounds like it should work, but we haven't tried it. Rainbow, Inc., who make the locks, say that their testing with Soft-PC/Windows "worked pretty well." We'd appreciate comments from anyone who has tried and either failed or succeeded in running HyperChem in this way.
