27. I've just installed NT 4.0 and HyperChem (and/or my printer) won't run.

The Support Desk is logging reports for HyperChem 4, 4.5 and 5.01 which all concern accessing the license (via the dongle) and/or printing on the NT 4 platform, with and without Service Packs 1 and 2. (A work-around for printing problems has been suggested in the Printer Problems FAQ.)

Microsoft recognizes that Windows NT 4 has some flaws when it comes to hardware locks. The Knowledge Base on the Microsoft web site has published two articles: please see the details in
"Windows NT Incorrectly Handles Dongle Support"
( http://www.microsoft.com/kb/articles/q143/1/26.htm ) and
"Dongle may not function under Windows NT 4.0"
which address this issue.

According to the Microsoft Knowledge Base, Windows NT 4 is incorrectly handling initialization of the parallel ports, which hinders third-party devices such as the Rainbow dongle from trapping any I/O. Microsoft has updated the Ntdvm.exe to correct the problem. In the hotfixes-postSP1 folder you will find ntvdm-fix; see ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/nt40 .

In their documentation, Microsoft states the supported fix is available but not fully tested so it should only be applied to systems which are experiencing the hardware lock problems.

We would appreciate hearing from anyone who has tried the hotfix and whether it has solved the problem. Please e-mail us at support@hyper.com with the details.

The Hypercube Support Desk would like to thank Jesse Salb for help in trouble-shooting this one.

If you are unable to print to a non-postscript printer under NT 4.0, and you are running HyperChem 5.01, please contact our support desk at support@hyper.com to receive a copy of our latest patch that corrects this problem. This patch should replace your existing chem.exe.
